Tao Wang Memorial, located in the 6th Xiatang Street, Zhongshi District, Luzhi, is a residence with the architecture style of the Qing Dynasty. It faces the west, and consists of the showroom of Tao Wang’s lift story, Tao Wang’s previous house, and Tao Garden.
Tao Wang (1828-1897) is a Luzhi man, famous modern thinker, and the political commentator of the late Qing reformist. In the tenth year of Qing Guangxu, Tao Wang obtained the acquiescence of Hongzhang Li with the aid of Richang Ding, moved back to Shanghai and was recommended as the director of Gezhi Institution by Shanghai Zhongxi Directors. He also served as the Editor-in-Chief of the "Shanghai Post". Then he designed the Tao Garden in the west of Shanghai, and devoted himself to writing. In the twentieth year of Qing Guangxu, Tao Wang got acquainted with Zhongshan Sun through Guanying Zheng, and ever polished Sun’s manuscript of "Letter to Li Hongzhang". In the twenty third year of Qing Guangxu, Tao Wang died of an illness in his apartment of West Cottage in Shanghai, and was buried in his hometown of Luzhi. In 1998, the People's Government of Luzhi Town built Tao Wang Memorial so as to commemorate the thinker, Tao Wang, promote his patriotism and open consciousness.
