Early in June 2006, the Luzhi Water Town Women’s Costume, honoured as living fossils of the Culture of Water Town, was approved by the State Council and announced to be the first batch of state-level intangible cultural heritage.


The traditional costume of Luzhi women is very characteristic of water town, dubbed as "the minority of Suzhou" by the city people. So far Luzhi area still retains its traditional characteristics of water town women’s national costumes of the southern Yangtze River. Especially in the western region of the town, women over the age of 40 are still popular in the town streets. It can be seen that women wearing the traditional costume are also a beautiful water town landscape.


Suzhou Luzhi Water Town Women's Costume is the product of the water rice agriculture periods of Wu region for thousands of years, and the outstanding representative of the Han nationality’s dress of China. Suzhou Luzhi Water Town women's costume are featured by "significant", "Pretty" and "Ingenious", and can be of a must by virtue of the appliable "white". On May 20th, 2006, the Luzhi Water Town women's costume was approved by the State Council and announced to be the first batch of state-level intangible cultural heritage.
