Xuanjuan, as a folklore, has been widespread in the southern region. It’s mainly popular in rural areas, deeply loved by the people, especially the elderly alike. Xuanjuan was evolved from the "folk talk" by the Tang Dynasty monk, the "discussing scriptures" in the Song Dynasty, and the latter drum tuning, folk songs, operas, drama. Until the Mingde years in the Ming Dynasty, it started with the "Xuanjuan" title, was officially published.
During the Xianfeng years of the Qing dynasty, Xuanjuan was spread to Luzhi. Current Xuanjuan is also called as stringed Xuanjuan, evolved by Muyu Xuanjuan, changed and developed in some extent compared to the previous one. Since the appearance of “Kunjue” (female), the former pattern dominated by two males was broken and became the combined team, which was declared mainly by a person, with one or two Kunjue, and the introduction of folk music accompaniment, it showed more attractive than ever before.
In our Luzhi area, there are four or five classes of Xuanjuan artists, of which each class consists of 6~8 persons, and the main artists of the classes are dominated by the male, aged between 40 to 60 years. Team generally has three to four actresses, aged between 30 to 50 years old, who are usually good at acting and duet.
